It's the Sarsaparilla Generation. Remember Dr. Denton sleepers and Dick Tracy Kits and Tom Mix and Johnny Weismuller and Little Orphan Annie and her Secret Circle and.... Ralph Wesley Parker remembers, as he goes back to his home town Hohman, Indiana and all these only yesterdays are strung together over a few beers at the bar. When he was a little squirt of only seven or so and got that Red Ryder BB gun (which broke his glasses) for Christmas; and when he was fourteen and ""life was flowing through me in a deep rich torrent of Castoria"" and there was Junie Jo Prewitt, a beautiful blind date; and some of the great times with his Old Man who won a puzzle contest and who took him fishing and let him shine up his Graham Paige.... and the ****** in the eyes of a youngster on the Fourth of July and Penny Candy and a great musicmaker called the sousaphone.... HOLY SMOKE! The good old days seem really young and fresh and this should speak to the men who were once boys. That should take care of a great many people. (Shepherd has a radio following who've been tuning in on the same frequency for years; then some of this had a Playboy appearance; and the publishers are right behind it. It's the kind of book which could easily take off from Chicago first.)
