This is Miss Valentine's second collection of brief poems (Dream Barker, 1965). With a strong lyrical line--a kind of tonal undertow to a dazzling fleet of images--she writes of love and departures, of knowing instances, and ""a way back in the dark."" Although the poet's perceptions seem sometimes to fly up and away from the verse, the poems, opening with melodic invention, demand participation: ""The fox went under the garden/thinking. The watersnake/never moved, or the sun."" Miss Valentine's first book of poems won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award.
