The author, who has already established herself as an outstanding biographer, offers here a sensitive and well documented account of one of this country's most gifted writers. Not only does Miss Eaton capture the period in which Twain lived, a period which combined the nationalist vigor of the pioneer spirit with the exuberant birth of cultural self-awareness and cosmopolitanism, but she deftly presents Twain as a man of striking contradictions. Noted for his intensely humorous writing, Twain's was a life dogged with tragedy; insatiable for the experiences and rewards of the moment, his was an inner consciousness which demanded of him that in some lasting way, he serve. Though many fictional devices are used by the author, the facts presented are clearly documented and will give the Twain enthusiast a stimulating insight into the world and personages which he so lovingly incorporated into his classic novels and essays.
