MR. HEFF AND MR. HO

There's a touch of fantasy to this charmingly humorous story of small town happenings -- as original a story and as different from Margaret and The Bird as they were from each other. Here's a writer we can count on...F. Flowerfield, naturalist, tells his story with dry yet gentle humor. He has moved to Odd Corners, and finds that his gear, with its nets and tricky suitcases, camera and so forth, frighten the townspeople. He makes friends with his boarding house keeper and her son Hawksie, and he and the railroad engineer (who happens also to be an organ grinder) become cronies. Floweryfield nicknames his friend Mr. Ho, and is in turn nicknamed Mr. Heff. And they talk endlessly of trains and music, butterflies and Mr. Ho's disappearing monkey. They go to ball game picnics. And when Jocko turns up it is Mr. Heff who realizes that he is running away from being leashed. The reader has a warm feeling around the heart when he decides to stay on in Odd Corners. A book for all the young in heart.
