Don Tiburcio, the school master of a remote Spanish village, has no other worldly goods than his vast library and an inscrutable parrot. It is the bird, Don Tiburcio's sole inheritance, that provokes the curious little gypsy, Pepe, to investigate the secret of a family crest. As a result of his search, after many village crises, a huge fortune is unearthed by the intellectually agile Pepe. A suspenseful mystery finds dimension here through the author's warm portrayal of character and her loving delineation of the Spanish village atmosphere.
