WOODLAND PORTRAITS

Publisher: Little, Brown

A breathtakingly lovely book, which promises to be the luxury trade gift book of the season. At first glance one feels that this cannot be a collection of photographs, but rather a rarely beautiful group of paintings, in which the artist has chosen one aspect or another to stress, while muting background. As photographs, this opens a whole new field of creative and imaginative work. The photographer is a naturalist as well, and had shared her sense of discovery and enchantment in the woods she loves. Each ""portrait"" rewards careful study, -- for sheer delight in beauty of pattern and color and mood, for unusual technical experiments, for flexibility in use of background now muted, now given its own emphasis. The carefully detailed record of equipment, lens, filter, timing, as well as notes on light, etc. make this a valuable book for the earnest student of photography as well as for those who will want it for its artistic perfection.
