KIRKUS REVIEW

This unpretentious little book about the taming of the American Frontier is the briefest of introductions to the story, but a good one. Beginning with the Louisiana Purchase in 1806, traces the step by step conquest of America's vast unexplored regions west of the Mississippi up through 1873. Mentioned in passing are many of the familiar personalities; Lewis and Clark, Brigham Young, Bat Masterson, Custer, Kit Carson, even Jesse James and Billy the Kid. The lack of good territorial maps is regrettable, but for all his brevity the author conveys a read appreciation of the adventure behind a young nation's development.
