A young outcast unwittingly awakens an ancient power.
Haven is a young girl living in a small desert village outside the heavily guarded walls of the city of Raqmu with Yassu, her kind, ailing guardian. Survival is a struggle for those who live outside the city; a scarcity of resources has taught Haven to be a resourceful problem-solver, scavenging what she can to invent and repair gadgets. Unfortunately, even among her marginalized community, Yassu and Haven are targets of prejudice and cruelty. One night each year, Raqmu is open to all for the Ringnir Festival. Haven utilizes the distraction of the festivities to search for the city’s junkyard, seeking precious mechanical parts. Instead, she finds herself in a vast underground vault, where she discovers a mysterious object. Lan is a wealthy city girl who’s sympathetic toward outsiders. When Haven is spotted by guards and must flee, she crosses paths with Lan, who saves her from capture. The object Haven took ends up sparking a thrilling saga. In their graphic novel debut, Xu and Rhodes create a setting that’s a dazzling blend of technology, magic, and divine antiquity, with architectural elements that evoke the Islamic world. The energetic illustrations deliver rich storytelling in full color. Haven has light brown skin and brown hair and eyes, and Lan has light brown skin, dark hair, and green eyes.
A thrilling duology opener set in a compelling world.
