Many children are anxious about starting school, and William is no exception. Although he is excited about his first day, William is initially bewildered by his new surroundings and does not want to interact with the other children or participate in the activities led by his kind and patient teacher. His mother’s benevolent presence—she stays, at his request, for the first few days—offers reassurance, and before long he spots another boy playing by himself. William’s mother gently encourages him to approach the other boy, and a friendship begins to develop. By the end of the story, William is excited about school and ready to be independent. Cheerful watercolor illustrations portray the multicultural students and teacher and highlight many objects and activities that a preschooler will see and experience in the classroom. This straightforward tale of a boy’s adjustment to preschool is not a new story, but the presence of children of various races adds a realistic touch, and it will provide warmth and reassurance to children who may be nervous about starting school.
