Tempest in teapot brew, as the small spites, reprisals and revenges of two leading ladies simmer away. The town is Guilford, small, select and snobbish. Phyllis Webb, recently widowed, thirty-two and glamorous comes to live there and expands in the role of rich and gracious lady, vying with her cousin Florence Drew on every occasion. Disputes arise over antiques, sold them by the town's impoverished aristocrat; but the real sorehead is the lake they jointly own, which Phyllis decides to improve -- and which Florence donates to the town, in retaliation. Phyllis creates further trouble by annexing the ten-year nominal fiance of another, Various climaxes arise and subside until Phyllis, bankrupt, leaves town in a hurry, having put on a good, trouble-making show. Social comedy -- intelligently handled -- but there's something a little unsympathetic, and trivial, about it all.
