A narrative history"" is the perfectly worded sub-title of this book. Beginning with the earliest settlements at Jamestown, Plymouth and Sales and carrying on to this very year, the author tells the story of the beginnings and development of the various Protestant groups in this country. At each stage of the development of the country the part played by the Protestant churches is made clear. In the Colonial period, through the Revolution, in the expansion of the frontier westward, in the Civil War, in the industrialization and urbanization of our national life, and in World Wars I and II, the Protestant churches have played a significant role. All this and the changing trends in Protestant thought and life are touched upon in this most readable book. It is suited to the laity more than to scholars and the clergy.
