KIRKUS REVIEW

Another high-protein, low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet--with behavioral/analytical aspects added to make this the final solution to overweight. Schiff, a physician who specializes in treating overweight, claims that with his system ""the individual must understand the why and how of eating, then turn insight gained into pounds lost."" Said insight is gained through written diaries of food eaten and letters to the self; success is illustrated by stories from Dr. Schiff's own clientele. The gimmick is that the diet can be followed for one day at a time; sugar and flour are eliminated as the chief contributors to obesity--but ""Protein is another story. It slenderizes. It energizes. It heals. It builds body tissue. It adds life."" In fact, in his practice, Schiff has"" . . . seen marriages on the rocks become marriages on feather beds. I have seen businesses on the rocks begin to flow with profit. . . I offer this to you."" He nods to ""a moderate amount of exercise,"" but wholeheartedly endorses ""Daydream-type mental gymnastics"" (apparently some form of self-analysis or hypnosis) which ""pay off in easy weight loss."" He includes a large section of recipes (appetizers to desserts), and okays liquid protein diets when used in a program which includes other meals. Harmless overall--for those looking for another guide to this kind of diet, willing to put some effort into pinpointing emotional attachments to food, and able to put up with ""Are you drowning in a bowl of self-pity? Are you stifling in a platter of remorse?
