Most of these essays and papers were written while the author was special assistant for science and technology to the late President Kennedy and President Johnson, and thus offer a unique and well-qualified view of the range of scientific and technological problems facing a modern president. The essays encompass three groups: Science Meets Politics, with articles such as ""Science in an Affluent Society"" and ""Water Resources and Research""; Education in Modern Life, with ""Meeting Our Technological Needs"" and ""Education for Productivity in Science""; learning About Disarmament, which contains the most fascinating, extremely worthwhile and informative essays on ""Relationship of Military Technology, Strategy and Arms Control,"" ""Comprehensive Arms-Limitations Systems,"" and "" National Security and the Nuclear Test Ban."" This last group gives a good view of the serious attempts to anticipate and cope with the logical, emotional and political actions and reactions facing the participants of an arms limitation agreement. The seldom explored relationships of politics to advanced science and research in laymen's terms make this book a title of particular interest to libraries.
