THE $30,000,000 CUP

Subtitled The Stormy History of the Winning and the Defense of the America's Cup, this record reviews the yachting events and circumstances which created a symbol of the Cup which was first taken by Commodore John C. Stevens of the New York Yacht Club when he defeated the entries of the Royal Yacht Squadron with the America in Cowles, England in 1851. Although in 1851 no special significance was attached to the winning of the Cup, since that time it is estimated that 20 million dollars have been spent to retrieve it and 10 million in its defense and often the intention of the Cup's donors -- that the Cup should inspire ""friendly competition between foreign nations"" -- has been muted throughout the numerous encounters. The Cup had remained permanently with the New York Yacht Club until, in 1951, it went back to Britain on loan for the Festival of Britain. An account mainly of interest to nautical enthusiasts.
