With the high water mark of I Can Get It For You Wholesale, What's In It For Me, etc., Weidman adds another panel to his portraits of heels, this time, Max, one time successful criminal lawyer, whose one great gesture (saving his father from a usury charge) sends him downhill voluntarily. A maturer character, Max still inspires fear, respect, obedience from those with whom he comes in contact, gets away with unbelievable rudeness, insolence, chiseling. In the down spiral with Max are Mary, a small time madam, her two lovers, Sophia, a waitress-whore, and an assortment of business men, Pennsylvania farmers, hangers on. Mounting friction, catalyzed by Max, passive degeneration, this is a picture of people without a future, and a past without memories. Hight as rain for what it is, accurate, coldblooded, clinical, hard to take-hard to forget.
