THE ADVENTURES OF JIMMY POOLE

Several pegs down from Branscum's life and Jim Luke (1971), Arkansas-accented Jimmy, white, and his black friend Poochie start out fishing and soon run into a dead body, a murderer, the KKK, and a swift river. Swept away by the latter, Jimmy takes up for a while with a friendly but moronic teenage giant who dies; Jimmy returns home in time to save Poochie from the Klan or the murderer, Filthy Logan, whichever would have got to him first. Allen plots a rousing reversal at every chapter break and commands a plausible style that makes this better reading than the average formula adventure.
