Basic sex information, mostly on physical matters and in coldly clinical terms. Psychiatrist O'Connor (New York's Columbia Presbyterian Medial Center) marches drily and precisely through male and female sexual anatomy; sexual development; the most common problems (impotence, low libido); ""Bodily positions in lovemaking""; and birth control methods. The text is occasionally addressed to therapists (""in the sessions the marital unit has with the co-therapists, the male therapist should sit facing the male patient. . .""); the occasional case histories do little to make the material more accessible. The conclusions are uniformly bland: ""compatibility is a state of living where individuals are capable of performing in harmonious, agreeable and congenial combinations."" Readers will do better with a more relaxed, less mechanical guide that opens up new possibilities for expression.
