An opera script by the author of The Friendly Persuasion -- based on the life of Audubon. Lyrically written, with happy songs and effective scenes and a background of choral and mob effects that personify typical American pioneer characters. Audubon's life is traced from his marriage to his frontier adventures, his determination to study and paint the birds he loves, his worry over his wife and children and their support, and- in old age-his recognition as first bird portraitist and naturalist. This has some of the qualities of Oklahoma, more thoughtful, superior in writing, but with the same fresh feel. It reads well- in production it would demand expert direction, high quality of singers and dancers, authoritative character parts.
