Everyone should like this latest collection of Jesse Stuart's some twenty short stories- or really episodes- of the Kentucky hill people he has already familiarized in earlier books. Some are charming and sad -- the love story of the two ""ugliest people around"" who happen to find eacy other very beautiful. Some are powerfully alive with a kind of sparkling savagery- the recollection of a Sunday's afternoon work at Hang Town. Others are very, very funny- in particular How Sportsmanship Came to Carver College, and again- the account of the mournful burial of a three hundred pound moonshiner, Sylvania. And throughout the book Stuart invokes the shaggy loveliness of the Kentucky hill country.... A book for his particular following, and for a general readership at every age level.
