The author's years as Kentucky schoolteacher offer an absorbing record of, not only educational ways, but of an individual's growth in his special fields. For, from his first job, when he had had only three years of High School and found his days in Lonesome Valley unforgettable in the lessons they taught him, he, after College, learned even more of the problems of teaching the young, and not so young. How he achieved the politic way, how he fought to win his beliefs in teaching, what a single teacher does with a school which ranges from beginners to 8th grade, what can be done about the questions of unattended privies, ambeer spitting, and walls decorated with obscenities, how you can answer the brutal horseplay and pass the test of acceptance -- all this and more marks a lively, sometimes gripping story of endurance and dedicated perseverance. Definitely worthwhile reading.
