From the moment Gypsy released her newborn calf, Soddy and Andy Scott were friends. Yet despite Mr. Scott's warning that Soddy would be sold for slaughter, Andy permitted himself a deepening attachment to the animal. Emotions however did not inhibit logical planning as Andy goes out each day to dig arduously for the precious gensing roots which he hopes will substitute for Soddy's sale. A suspenseful buildup leads to a happy ending in which 3 pounds of dried gensing sells for 8 dollars a pound, the price offered for Soddy. Rural locale flavor which distinguishes much of Jesse Stuart's writing permeates this story as well.
