KIRKUS REVIEW

The old tale by liver Goldsmith, one of Newbery's first publications, in a new edition with good period pictures in color and wash by Jessie Gillespie. Appropriate to the text, with its not too obvious moral tone and slight flavor of sentimentality, the pictures help bridge the gap and stress the timeless appeal of the orphan child who became a famous teacher and introduced alphabet in graphic form.
