ANTICIPATING THE SEASONS

By

Pub Date: March 1st, 1989
Publisher: Facts on File

Intriguing short facts about plant and animal adaptations to seasonal changes--including discussions of biological clocks, migration, hibernation, and breeding patterns--coupled With over 100 full-color photographs and drawings. While the format and contents here are appealing, the bizarre facts lack scientific verification: ""Sharks are able to detect electrical currents as weak as a flashlight battery connected to two terminals 990 miles apart""; ""Students who sleep with their feet pointing north or south have a better sense of direction than those who sleep in an east/west position."" Such statements may be true, but since the young reader has no information about how these conclusions were reached, the result is more one of trivial pursuits than of scientific inquiry. Of limited usefulness. Glossary, index, books for further reading.
