Luscious photographs of fruits take readers on a gastronomic trip to India, presenting foods North American readers will recognize readily (watermelons, strawberries and grapes, for example) and some that will seem more exotic (pomegranate, custard apple and jackfruit, to name a few). The fruits are arranged against backgrounds that let their colors pop: A bright yellow mango, halved, sits on a crinkled piece of purple tissue; a deep orange papaya, cut to show its glistening black seeds, sits on a glowing turquoise plate. None of the fruits is named, which may confound Western readers until they find them listed in order in the back, where readers are encouraged to name them in “your own language,” too.
