Hollywood director-producer Frank Derwent, known as F.D., is rich, tyrannical, oversexed, and cares for nothing on earth but the movies he makes. Barbara Slaney, his latest blue-eyed blonde bimbo, found for him as usual by slavish assistant Howard Maxwell, can actually act and has a part in the film that F.D.'s making on the Scottish island of Ardcraig. Wanda, his cool, fitness-oriented wife of 20 years, is along to work on the book she's writing, rumored to contain the destruction of a dozen reputations--those of cast members Mark Ingrain and Sue Quentin among them. The violent deaths of Barbara and Wanda, in quick succession, bring Detective Superintendent Hugh Patterson, once in love with Sue, to a scene full of false clues, movie-making techniques, confusing time-sequences, complex relationships and a third murder. It needs hefty outside assistance, but eventually Patterson gets his killer. A clever if overplotted story that's the author's best to date (Gone to Her Death, etc.).
