NEAR THE SEA: A Portfolio of Paintings

Soft, liquid oil paintings and a lyrical text celebrate the sea, shore, and creatures of Maine's coast. The author turns his artist's eye to a catch of bluefish, a soaring gull, a tidal pool, and the beach and boatyard in this splendid fusion of text and illustrations. Arnosky's paint is so thinly applied that the texture of the canvas becomes part of his design as he expertly captures the restless, swirling movement of clouds, surf, and sand. The poetic text, while brief, is carefully crafted--vivid and evocative. Wonderful for reading aloud--and a treasure for anyone who loves the sea.
