Nature is the chief subject matter of this second book of poems by an accomplished poet and reviewer of poetry. It is a densely described and lived-in world of a real outdoors, in which all the locations of lakes, fields, trees, towns are given from specific and personal knowledge. The inhabitants of this world are also specifically named and located; Cooper's hawks, deer, raccoons, swans, constellations, and the states of mind and emotion of a sophisticated man who is sometimes totally immersed in the simplicity of seasons, wildlife, hunting; sometimes forging this awareness into a larger sense of the universe; and sometimes (in the poems toward the end of the book) adrift but aware in cities, roads, fields, bus stations, and other outposts of the world of men. A solidity of inner vision and a strong, simple, descriptive language relates all these ""Locations.
