PARENTS WITHOUT PARTNERS

For those involved in this troublesome if common dilemma, here is a good deal of sound opinion -- judicial and psychiatric -- and a great many realistic recommendations for dealing with the pitfalls. Emphasized is the need to protect rather than destroy the child's relationship with his father, the anomalous position of the father who is usually without custody and his difficulty in maintaining continuity with the child in a part-time situation, how the visit should be handled, the problems posed by remarriage and the position of the step parent. Definitely child-centered, this can be read meaningfully even by teachers who are so often called upon to advise in these matters.
