THE COMING OF THE MORMONS

The Explorations of Pere Marq done by the author for Landmark Books in 1941 (p.439) is only one of his variety of well researched historicals, both fact and fiction. Here, he turns the Mormons' story into a smooth narrative. We know at the end of the book, a good deal about them- the early persecutions in the east, Joseph Smith's prophecy, the rise of Brigham Young, the rigours of the trek, the elation at finding and successfully settling Salt Lake, their troubles with Indians, the government and the crickets. But one fault is disregard for their religious background and there is little to tell us why they formed the group characteristics they did.
