THE SPORTING WORLD OF JIM MURRAY by Jim Murray

THE SPORTING WORLD OF JIM MURRAY

Addressing the readers who go for a ""squirt of humor and twist of irreverence"" in their sportswriting, Mr. Murray of the Los Angeles Times comes forth with his second libation of columns old and new. Like most convivial, successful sportswriters, Jim Murray affects a stance of boozy devotion to the joyous lunacy of spectator sports, magnified to epic proportions. Among the heroes and victims: Big Lou Groza, ""The Greatest Toe on Earth""; dignified Floyd Patterson; ""The Brown Bombee""; misfit Sandy Koufax, who had the sort of childhood in which people cried when he had his first haircut; Hurricane Jackson, with three managers, each taking 33 1/3% of the loot. Mr. Murray simmers and pops with indignation at times: about the unfair impecunious retirement of the mighty Joe Louis; another ""Mystery Guest"" as commissioner of baseball; the illegal peccadillos of Sonny Liston. Throughout Murray tunes his siren song to the bleacher/ringside roar of the addicted fans. Great to eat grandstand hotdogs by.
