MORE HARDCORE: Three Novels

A follow-up to last year's Hardcore, this is a hard-cover reprint of three more circa-50's paperback metiers from ultra-hard-boiled but always digestible Thompson. Thompson's influence on current crime-king Elmore Leonard and his many imitators is evident throughout these quirky, nasty, sexy, lickety-split first-person tales. In The Ripoff, a hard-up becomes even harder-up when he goes up against the Mob and a dangerous femme fatale; in The Golden Gizmo, a kind of demented Maltese Falcon, a low-life chases the high life. And Roughneck appears to be not a novel at all, but straight autobiography--albeit Thompson-style: swift, mean, and compelling.
