KIRKUS REVIEW

Oh continues the adventures of Cat and Mouse as Mouse prepares for the first day of school confident that the support of his close friend Cat will ease any transition issues. However, when they arrive, Mouse quickly finds himself adrift as Cat rushes to reunite with old school pals. Oh adroitly addresses a universal scenario of old versus new friends that readers will readily recognize—with the reassurance of Cat, Mouse learns that new friendships do not diminish the importance of old ones. Oh’s enchanting collage illustrations are worthy of repeat viewing. Interesting textures mingle with unique graphics to create multi-layered images. Her full-bleed illustrations have a distinctive flair, adding to the intriguing appeal of the whimsical images like the copy of the author’s previous book lying next to Cat’s bed or the miniature framed portrait of the Mona Lisa with mouse ears and nose tucked into a corner of one illustration. A visual delight coupled with a timely message for readers facing the first day of school, Oh’s tale enchants. (Picture book. 4-8)
