A patterned horse story adds to its stature by a pleasant family picture, believable situations and enough spectacular action for reading enjoyment. For 12 year old Sib Riley is a completely normal girl -- good and bad tempered, loyal and friendly -- and her championship of Scotty who turns up at Skylark Farm turns out to be well worthwhile. For Scotty is accused of horse stealing, the family think Scotty may have stolen Sib's ten dollars for the entry fee for the horse show at the county fair, but Sib believes in his honesty, and his help in training Cactus, her very own horse, makes it possible for her to win the show. Not before Scotty has created more problems which are explained away at the end of the show. Farm life in Washington, sound horsemanship, and easily handled suspense.
