No doubt about it either, this is one mystery that can be read also for the characters that tell it and the way it is told. Take the Borgans, outwardly normal, necessarily thrifty--and then The Affluence, a daily handout from Grandad to make dreams come true. Where did he get the money? What use do they make of it? Shifting narrators from ineffectual Father to self-contained sixteen-year-old Griselda move the plot along--fast--mesh, diverge, come out changed for better or worse. Deserves the attention the title will attract.
