The uncrowned king of Ireland"" -- his life, political growth and tragic romance is presented in detailed, yet readable form. The famed Irish patriot, who came so near his aim for his country, only to lose all in the scandal created by Katie O'Shea's divorce, is an interesting figure -- his lack of interest in Ireland turned into calculating yet brilliant efforts on her behalf, his solitary life in England into which Katie O'Shea came -- and conquered all too well -- his relations with his lieutenants, friends and enemies, his methods in Parliament, etc. This does the man full justice and gives an understandable picture of the fight Ireland was making for her independence. A clear-cut, human figure emerges.
