HI, JOCK, RUN AROUND THE BLOCK by Joan Kahn

HI, JOCK, RUN AROUND THE BLOCK

After the attention-grabbing bit of nonsense (""I looked into a window/ and saw a great big bear/ and a little man with scissors/ who was cutting off his hair""), the sights Jock sees on his run around the block are pretty ordinary--and blandly described: ""At our brand-new firehouse/ the doors were open wide/ so I could see the engine/ and the firemen inside."" After each four-line observation (on a haunted house, pet-store window, or whatever Jock is passing), Kahn ends with an italicized ""Hi, Jock, run around the block""--a refrain which, along with Darrow's hasty diagonals, does keep this moving. But it's a downhill trip.
