A rather superficial picture of the author's father, with the emphasis almost wholly on his Socialism, the elements in his life which gave him a contradictory passion for the underdog, outweighed by his love for money's power. Sporadi movements of the period, the waves of Socialism attacking this country and Europe, a background for London:- and the result, a biography skimming the surface of the man and his career, that is much less good reading than Irving Stone's book. Nothing of human relationships, the two marriages, the other women! Such good taste it is dull. The aftermath of the boom days in San Francisco and Oakland and the days before the great fire have some local interest -- but the whole is milk without any cream.
