KIRKUS REVIEW

Photographer Loss plays twenty variations on a guessing game that asks us to identify some highly magnified everyday objects -- toothbrush bristles, salt crystals, sponge, a brillo pad, sneaker shoelaces, etc. The concept is striking and the 35 mm closeups are technically interesting despite their reproduction on dull, low contrast paper. The lockstep, textless format, the lack of any sequential development and, in many cases, the sheer impossibility of determining what the object is fail to sustain attention. Nevertheless, certain classrooms or other group situations might make the connections that would make the game more than a passing novelty.
