KIRKUS REVIEW

A fresh, wry Hanukkah story. Rosie is helping her grandmother prepare for the family's Hanukkah party. Grandma is wearing her dress inside out. Rosie asks her why. Grandma answers that it will help her remember to buy enough oil to fry the potato latkes. Rosie is understandably slow to see the connection, and asks more questions, each one leading to Grandma's sharing of warm family memories. The cumulative effect is affecting and endearing; Rothenberg's bright gouache and pencil paintings add just the right humorous tone. Particularly joyful are the borders that echo the story's action: gelt, dreidels, latkes, and the pinked edges of Grandma's dress. A book as welcome as a platter of freshly fried latkes--happily, a recipe is included. (Picture book. 4-8)
