A carefully detailed story of life in the great circuses of Europe and America, in which the story loses itself in the factual background. One could feel this would better have been presented as non fiction than fiction. The story traces the adventures of the boy, Kai Yong, who ships aboard a German freighter from Namping, at a time that keeps pace with contemporary history. He and his friend, Wong, create a successful juggling act. Eventually he founds his own troupe and travels the world. He marries Joanna, a German, and their children are trained to be acrobats. Authentic scenes from circus life background the march of events from World War I to the 1955 Big Show- in Madison Square Garden. Festivals and national customs lighten what tends to be a somewhat sombre philosophical tone.
