The pictures are better than the text, though they are somewhat pretty-pretty. I don't like the double column layout of the pages, it gives the book the appearance of a reference book, and the miscellaneous inclusion of all sorts of material emphasizes that impression. Pilgrims, cooking and eating, the Dutch, sewing seams, Quakers, Colonial days, school, days of '76, tithing-man, travel and taverns, Civil War, pioneering, Christmas and Arbor Day:- this conveys the range of subjects, all briefly and not very dramatically handled. Content material for beginning readers, to be used with other books.
