The fiercest Ice Age mammal was a big cat,"" the Saber-Toothed Tiger, who lived after the dinosaurs had disappeared and who hunted woolly mammoths, which are also featured here. ""There were other kinds of prehistoric elephants"" plus the woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, giant ground sloth, giant armadillo (""many mammals of the Ice Age were giants""), and other oversized precursors of animals we know. Cole briefly spotlights each in turn, and ends with a scenario of how several of them--plant-eaters attracting carnivores who succumb to the same fatemight have got stuck in the tar pits where the bones of many were found. Defining the Ice Age and noting that prehistoric people lived then too, this is a respectable sequel to Dinosaur Story, but--being chiefly a catalog of the separate species--with somewhat less dimension.
