Dragon And Phoenix ($25.95; Dec. 13; 544pp.; 0-312-86430-2). Second entry in Bertin’s fantasy series (The Last Dragonlord, 1998) about Dragonlords Linden Rathan and his beloved soul-twin, the former sea captain Maurynna. Dragonlords are quick, fireproof, telepathic, and can transform themselves into dragons at will. This time out, Bertin introduces a far-off, oriental-flavored land where phoenixes are both symbolic and actual. Ho-hum.
