Moff presents a thorough post-operative guide to bariatric surgery for patients that includes information about eating, drinking, exercise and potential complications.

Physician Assistant Moff has synthesized her experience with bariatric surgery patients into an informative book that should answer many common post-operative questions. In an easily understood, empathetic voice, she explains the medical reasoning behind her recommendations and lists many options for patients. It is important, she writes, for patients to drink sufficient fluids, eat enough protein and obtain the proper nutrients. Achieving these goals is somewhat different following bariatric surgery, and she explains the hows and whys, providing analysis of many convenience foods and dining-out suggestions. Detailed charts list nutrient contents for a variety of foods, and the best edible sources of minerals. Varied recipes give patients a starting point for thinking about nutritional content and home cooking. Moff understands the dilemma that exercise may present to those who have recently experienced surgery, and makes many suggestions on introducing exercise as a fun and regular part of life–such starting small by walking a dog. The author reviews effective, no-equipment exercises that can be done at home, as well as several workout videos. While patients and physicians always hope for a smooth recovery, complications may always occur, and Moff discusses symptoms that may indicate problems–such as an anastomotic leak or bowel obstruction and more common issues such as constipation. Patients will also find recommendations for mental health, body image and social support. She concludes with a discussion of weight discrimination in our society.

A useful guide to post-surgery decisions about lifestyle, food and exercise.
