WHY DO CATS' EYES GLOW IN THE DARK?

Children may well ask questions like this (see title) about animals, but they will not find very satisfying answers in this browsing work. ""Why are giraffes so tall?"" According to the authors, the long neck helps giraffes spot predators and enables them to feed on tree leaves; although these statements are true, they do not answer the question. ""How can parrots talk?"" The answer here is that parrots can produce human speech because their bodies are large, their natural voices low, and they have unusually large mouths and tongues. If this is all that is needed, why don't owls talk? And how come parakeets do? Questions are presented in no particular order; no attempt is made to build on concepts discussed in the questions.
