Disco never dies.

Dave the walrus loves everything about disco, from the sounds to the glittery aesthetic. He watches as couples at the local discotheque demonstrate the Bump, the Funky Chicken (performed, of course, by a chicken), and the Robot. But Dave’s own moves prove disastrous. He dutifully enrolls in dance lessons, but despite some early signs of success, his performance still ends in a crash. Nevertheless, he optimistically shows off at a friend’s birthday party, again causing chaos. His pals sensitively suggest he change his focus, but Dave tries at a contest and once more falls flat. After the DJ quits, it looks like the discotheque will close, but Dave takes on a new challenge: mastering all the “levers and knobs and lights.” And finally, success! Dave was born to be a DJ. His determination and dedication are the keys that allow him to persist and adapt—as the psychologist’s afterword confirms. Happily, the story makes clear that Dave won’t give up on dance, either. Kozak’s peppy illustrations channel the 1970s, with dayglo colors, psychedelic patterns, headbands, body suits, and oversize glasses. Dave’s aspirations are high, but supportive friends help him find a new route to his goal; readers will feel encouraged to pursue their own passions.

A heartfelt reminder that falling on one’s face often gives us the opportunity to rise in a whole new direction.
