MISTER SLINGSHOT

By

Publisher: Macrae-Smith

Author Joe Archibald's years as a sports reporter add real muscle to this goal post-vocation-romance, which measures up to his earlier Touchdown Glory. Dan Jamison, whose father had been a football great at Midwest University, never really starred on the football field. Determined to succeed for his father's sake, he joins the professional team, the Badgers, although his fiancee, Betty Kendall, swore she would never marry a professional football player. In time, Dan becomes a star player, and realizes that his father had drifted for years on the laurels of his football fame in college. After Dan is seriously injured and decides to leave the game, he discovers that his father has bet the family homestead on the results of the next game. Although it means risking his health, Dan plays the game and wins the girl with some unexpected twists at the end. Author Archibald needles football ""scholarships"" en route and gives a good picture of a son who helps his father to mature. Extra gristle to this gridiron yarn with the basic issues driven home subtly but forcefully without preaching.
