MANNY SANGUILLEN: Jolly Pirate

One of the better baseball bios--about that free-swinging, Bible-reading Pirate catcher with the ""wide grin and happy-go-lucky attitude."" Born into poverty in Colon, Panama, Manny was a ""brawling, drinking, gambling"" delinquent until his reformation through religion. Having taken up the game at the late age of twenty, he signed with Pittsburgh shortly thereafter in 1964. ""Sangy"" experienced language problems, difficulty in catching, and baserunning lapses during his four years in the minors. Known as ""Mr. Smiles,"" Sanguillen intends to ""work for God"" when his playing days are over (as he's currently slugging at a .338 clip, that shouldn't be for a few years yet). A solid job with some welcome Hispanic flavor.
