No man has written more prolifically than Mr. Joel S. Goldsmith on mystical religion and the arts of meditation and contemplation. His latest, Our Spiritual Resources, will be welcomed by those who practise these arts, and who find the practices of more formal, organized religion dry and unprofitable. The mystics and the contemplatives through the ages have found the solitary approach to union with God more rewarding than the orthodox paths. Others, however, have found the reality of God very vividly within the worship and work of the Church, and those will find Mr. Goldsmith's writings vague, diffused, and almost selfishly God-intoxicated, and disturbed by his slighting of the historic reality of Jesus as the unique Son of God. Yet there is much help here for those who would seek to understand more about contemplative prayer.
