As Jewish girls in Holland Mrs. Reiss and her older sister spent more than two years during the German occupation in an upstairs room of a Dutch farmhouse. The necessary adjustments to a warm but non-Jewish home, the frustrations and discomforts of confinement, the moments of terror, are recalled with pain and humor and evident love for the Oostervelds.
